Woman's Cote

Woman's Cote

I made this under dress or cote for a themed event for which I borrowed a friend's surcote. It was a winter event so I chose to make it from a cotton waffle knit. This is not the most authentic period garment I have constructed, but it was warm and has a nice rustic feeling for a peasant costume. The simple two-piece construction comes right from one of my patterning books. I chose to ombre dye the dress knowing that my hem was going to get muddy. I took the idea of the real nature of tromping around in the woods in the wet winter and incorporated it into a theatrical design by raising the eye from muck to dye to the clear whiteness of the shoulders.
